‘Sunburn Art’ Takes Fun in the Sun Too Far

I’m Shelby Cullinan with today’s health news.
With beach season in full swing, a new trend is sweeping social media this summer — and
it’s one that experts are saying may put people’s health at risk. This risky form of body art,
being called “sunburn art” is created by using sunscreen to draw images or designs on the
skin before exposing the body to the sun. As the surrounding skin burns, the design
that was protected by sunscreen becomes visible on the burned skin. The Skin Care Foundation,
or SCF, issued a statement stressing the serious risks that come along with the practice. According
to the SCF, around 5 million people are treated for skin cancer each year in the US. Around
135,000 new cases of melanoma are also diagnosed each year, and it is estimated that one person
dies of this dangerous type of skin cancer every hour in the US.
