Shaq Aka DJ Diesel On The Art Of DJing, Loving Bass Music & The 1st Vinyl He Spun | On The Road

Alina>>I’m sitting here with Shaq, a.k.a.
DJ Diesel. How ya doin? Shaq>>Before we start. Tell your husband whose also a DJ tell him
I said “Hello” Alina>>I Will! I will, DJ Love see that’s what it’s all about. Shaq>>Yeah, always, respect. Alina>>Definatley. Yeah, now you’ve played a lot of different
festivals. What about Lollapalooza makes this different,
and special. Shaq>>I don’t know. I havent, played yet. Alina>>Ok Shaq>>I havent been here, but I was taught. A long time ago. When you find something difficult, break it
down to where it becomes easy. This is for – for artists, being a DJ, it’s
hard work everything has to be done right. So I always break it down, and the only common
factor that I am familiar with is large crowds. So then I say to myself “What did I do, to
make the large crowds go crazy in L.A.? You make a great play. Write that down.” Shaq>>I’ve been doing this since 1988. Alina>>Right. Shaq>>So ya know a lot of the people especially
on the social media they think Im doing it for the fad. 1. I’m not getting paid anything I enjoy watching
people jump up and down. I take pride in looking at people and saying
“Ok you paid money to watch me perform I’ma get you your money’s worth, so its about the
sport I coulda chose any style of music I like base music. I’m 7′ 350 I consider myself hard. When I played
on the basketball court I was hard. I liked the hard drops I like the kids that
bang their heads unreal I like mosh pits thats what I like DJing, I can DJ any style- Alina>>Weve seen you mosh pit this summer
for sure. Shaq>>Yeah thats what I like. Alina>>Hows your Summer of Shaq Tour going? Shaq>>It’s going pretty good. I uh- Alina>>Yeah. Shaq>>We probably only lost one game. But other than that it’s going pretty good. I did L.A. Yesterday, and they kinda upset
me because they put me as a celebrity DJ and they only gave me 30 minutes. I was pissed, I’m like “L.A.? My City?” Alina>>Your City, you run that city. Shaq>>”You give me thirty minutes?” So yesterday I put- Yesterday I was- I was
in game seven mode. Down by one. The kids felt my energy everybody felt my
energy that was probably one of my best shows cause I felt that the guys, ya know – Which
is cool, which is- I understand. I’m a celebrity Im DJing you dont know my
history you put me in that category but it also motivates me to show the real DJ’s like
your husband that I respect the craft. Alina>>Now you’ve been in music for a hot
minute. I know alot of people dont know that. Uhm, what has been the evolution since like
your first debut album to now? Shaq>>It all happened in 1985. My father gave me my last whoopin’ and he
said ” Hey you need to start figuring out what you want to do or I’ma take you down
to the recruiters office and you’re gonna sign up early for the army.” So he gave me like a month to just figure
it out. So I would do work and do odd jobs. I went to a concert. “LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane.” I seen “Terminator X” up there, and the way
he had the crowd rocking I’m like “Damn” And then I went to my little bank. I said “Ok I got 200” Went to the pawn shop,
I needed 75 more dollars. I was – “You need me to walk your dog?” I was doing whatever it take, to get that
75 dollars, I got me the turn tables I started practicing right? I started learning. Alina>>What were the first two vinyls that
your put – that you mixed together? Shaq>>The first two vinyls, I got an ass
whoopin for this was commodores “Brickhouse” cause I was [Vocalizing]. And my dad came in like – like he took the
record and like, had his little glasses. “I know you aint scratching my god damn-”
[Laughs]. They all had scratches so I got a whoopin’. So then I bought “Beat Street” and then that’s
when “Jazzy Jeff” and all those guys start coming out so I went to watch them play. So I’ve been doing music for a long time. Then got away from it. I never wanted to become a rapper I just – When
I came into the NBA I wanted to be different. Arsenio kept calling me “Hey why don’t you
be on the show? Why don’t you be on the show?” I don’t wanna be another guy in a thousand
dollar suit. Bragging about what hes gonna do. I said “So I’ll do that part if you want,
but let me wrap with my favorite rap group.” So I rapped the song, “Whats up doc” with Fu Schnickens and the next day I got a Ten Million dollar – 3 album deal, from Jive. I didn’t know nothing about that. I couldn’t turn it down. I told em I said ” Ok I dont wanna do this
by myself its a lot of work, let me rap with all my favorite artists.” And you know basically it – it was a way of
me showing homage to them. And I’ve – I’ve went platinum twice, went
gold twice and I went wood once. It’s just like this it aint about being a
rapper, just about having fun and hanging with some people I love. Its not about being a DJ its about all these
people that payed money and giving them the oppurtunity to jump up and down. Alina>>If you could describe your mood right
now, with one song, what would it be? Shaq>>Ima have to go with DJ Kahlid “All
I do is win” Alina>>Ayyy [laughs] Shaq>>I was – I’ll probably drop that tonight. And another thing is I don’t know what I’m
gonna do until I see the crowd. Alina>>Really?! Shaq>>Yeah, see my crew – Alina>>See I was gonna to ask you. You seem to be like a genre-less DJ, you pull
from a lot of different genres. Shaq>>And my crew hates that. Alina>>Why? Shaq>>Because they, like – I guess, I don’t
know what other DJs do. But I guess they have their stuff prepared. I just go on the thing and pick a hundred
songs [vocalizes] and just slap em on we dont really have an order so I have to look at
the crowd. Alina>>So you feel the room or the crowd. Shaq>>Yeah I have to look at the crowd. Alina>>I like that. Shaq>>I have to look at that crowd cause
– And I learned that from – I had a show in Vegas. and they said “yeah, go on, whatever you want.”
and when I got there it was all corprate white guys. and luckily in my bookbag I had an old
white guy classic USB and it saved me. Cause I came in with Cardi b and all the corprate
guys were just looking at me like. Alina>>[Laughs] Shaq>>And then as soon as I threw on that
– doing that [vocalizes] Oh they started jamming [vocalizes] yeah they started jamming so I
said to myself “Ok you cant always think you know what people like until you look at em. B.O.B>>What’s up y’all this is B.O.B. G eazy>>This is G Eazy. Mo>>I’m Mo! Julia Michaels>>This is Julia Michaels! Logic>>This is Logic, make sure you subscribe
to the Recording Academy channel. Flex.
