HISTORY IS GOING TO BE CRUEL TO EDWIN EDWARDS. WHAT THE LEGACY OF THE STATE’S LONGEST-SERVING GOVERNOR OVERLOOKS. ONE OF THE BIG ISSUES FOR ADULT LEARNERS IS JUST TO HAVE THE COURAGE TO COME IN AND DO IT. OVERCOMING ILLITERACY IN LOUISIANA. HI, EVERYONE, I’M ANDRE’ MOREAU. MUCH MORE ON THOSE STORIES IN A MOMENT BUT RIGHT NOW ON SWI, AGO COMMISSIONER MIKE STRAIN HAS GIVEN THE GOAHEAD TO GB SCIENCES TO BEGIN PLANTING THE STATE’S FIRST LEGAL CROP OF MEDICAL MARIJUANA AT THEIR FACILITY IN SOUTH BATON ROUGE. THE FIRST PRODUCT IS EXPECTED TO BE AVAILABLE TO PATIENTS IN THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER. NOW A LOOK AT THE NEWS. THE STATE BOND COMMISSION VOTED TO BLOCK PRO OF THE NATIONS HARMINGEST BANKS FROM INVOLVEMENT IN A 00 MILLION-DOLLAR INTERSTATE HIGHWAY FINANCING PLAN BECAUSE OF HOLIDAYS THAT RESTRICT GUN SALES TO CUSTOMERS. ENTERGY WANTS TO RECOUP NEARLY MILLION DOLLARS IN LOSSES FROM UNPAID ELECTRIC BILLS DURING THE AUGUST 2016 FLOODS. IT IS ASKING STATE REGULATORS TO ALLOW A SURCHARGE ON MONTHLY BILLS FOR ALMOST 48,000 CUSTOMERS EVEN IF THEY NEVER MISSED A PAYMENT. AND MANATEE AREA SIGNS ARE POPPING UP ALONG THE COASTAL ACADIANA AND OTHER LOUISIANA WATERWAYS. THEY WARN BOATERS OF THE PRESENCE OF MANATEES. TWO COMMUNITY COLLEGES PLAN EXPANSION PROJECTS. DELGADO IN NEW ORLEANS SAYS IT WILL BUILD AN ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY BUILDING ON ITS ALGIERS CAMPUS AND AN ALLIED HEALTH, NURSING AND COOL FIRE ARTS BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN NEW ORLEANS. SOWELA TECHNICAL IN LAKE CHARLES PLANS A 10.$2 MILLION BUILDING TO TRAIN WORKERS IN CULINARY, GAMING AND HOSPITALITY FIELDS. WITH FEW POLITICAL RACES TO GET YOUR BLOOD PUMPING THIS FALL, IT IS EASY TO FAST-FORWARD TO THE NEXT YEAR’S GOVERNOR RACE. WE KNOW JOHN BEL EDWARDS. WE DON’T KNOW FOR CERTAIN HIS OPPONENTS. 15 MONTHS BEFORE THE ELECTION, IS THERE ANYBODY CHALLENGING JOHN EDWARDS? YOU HAVE ANYONE IN YOUR COVERAGE WHO HAS SAID SOUTH AND OUT THAT THEY WILL BE RUNNING AGAINST THE GOVERNOR? NO. AND VERY INTERESTING BECAUSE A YEAR FROM NOW IS WHEN THINGS WILL BE HEATING UP IN THE RACE. MAYBE NONE ARE DECLARING, BUT SOME ARE MAKING A LOT OF NOISE, NAMELY SENATOR JOHN KENNEDY, LANDRY AND ABRAHAM. THEY HAVE BEEN CONTINUOUS FREQUENT FOES OF THE GOVERNOR. CHRIS POINTED ESPECIALLY TO LANDRY. IT FELT LIKE THREE WEEKS, EVERY OTHER DAY, EITHER SENATOR KENNEDY OR ATTORNEY GENERAL LANDRY WERE ISSUING SOME SORT OF STATEMENT, A LETTER, CONSTANTLY CRITICIZING VARIOUS POLICIES. FROM THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE, THE LATEST HAS BEEN CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM WITH THE PRISONERS THAT GOT EARLY RELEASE AND ACTUALLY THE BIPARTISAN BILLS THAT THEY SAY THE GOVERNOR HAS NOT DONE A GOOD JOB ON VETTING PEOPLE BEFORE THEY WERE RELEASED. THEY SENT LETTERS TO THE GOVERNORS WARNING HIM. YOU NEED TO WATCH OUT WHEN THEY ARE DANGEROUS CRIMINALS AND PEOPLE ARE BEING MURDERED AND I THINK IT IS NATURAL. PEOPLE ARE BEING MURDERED BECAUSE OF THIS. THE PRESIDENT SPOKE VERY HIGHLY, VERY POSITIVELY TOWARDS GOVERNOR EDWARDS MULTIPLE TIMES AS THE GOVERNOR WAS SPEAKING AND DESCRIBING WHAT WAS GOING ON HERE. THE PRESIDENT WAS RESPONDING GOOD, GOOD, THIS IS GREAT. HE DID NOT MENTION THE LETTER THAT HE HAD RECEIVED FROM SENATOR KENNEDY. KENNEDY SAYING THIS ABOUT THE GOVERNOR TO THE BATON ROUGE PRESS CLUB LAST WEEK. THIS IS AMERICA AND YOU CAN BELIEVE WHAT YOU WANT AND I RESPECT HIS OPINION. IF HE WERE RIGHT, I WOULD AGREE WITH HIM. [LAUGHTER] BUT HE IS NOT. A HOT OF PEOPLE SEE IT THAT SENATOR KENNEDY GETS THE FIRST CALL AT IT. ATTORNEY GENERAL LANDRY HAS SAID POINT BLANK IF JOHN KENNEDY GETS IN THE RACE, I WILL NOT RUN. WE HAVE HEARD THAT FROM OTHER PEOPLE. THERE IS STILL A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WHO FEEL THAT HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR SUCH A — SO MANY REPUBLICANS IN THE RACE IN 2015, THAT PERHAPS JOHN BEL WOULD NOT HAVE WON. I REALLY BELIEVE THE ATTORNEY GENERAL THOUGHT MAYBE NOT THIS TIME, MAYBE — YOU KNOW, THIS IS SOMETHING I CAN STILL STAY IN THE ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE AND RUN LATER ON, SOMETHING LIKE THAT. THAT IS SOMETHING HE HAS TO WEIGH. IF HE RUNS FOR GOVERNOR, IT WILL BE IN THE SAME YEAR THE ATTORNEYS GENERAL OFFICE WILL BE UP FOR REELECTION SO HE WILL HAVE TO GIVE THAT UP TO RUN FOR GOVERNOR. SENATOR KENNEDY DOESN’T HAVE TO GIVE UP ANYTHING BECAUSE IF HE DOESN’T WIN, HE WILL JUST GO BACK TO BEING A SENATOR. AND WHAT ABOUT ABRAHAM FROM CONGRESS? AS CLOSE AS ANYBODY SAYING HE WILL RUN FOR GOVERNOR AND I THINK THAT HE IS AN INTERESTING CANDIDATE. IT IS HARD TO SAY WHAT EXACTLY HIS NAME RECOGNITION WOULD BE. EDWARDS IS TOUTING MEDICAID, A BUDGET THAT SEEMS NO LONGER ON THE BREAK AND BIG WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT WITH BUSINESSES RELOCATING AND EXPANDING HERE. I HAVE FOLLOWED HIM AROUND TO A LOT OF EVENTS ALONG SORT OF AGRICULTURE, TOWARDS BUSINESS, ALL OF THAT, JUST TO KIND OF GAUGE HOW IS HE BEING SEEN OUTSIDE. AND I THINK THAT HE IS VIEWED OVERALL PRETTY POSITIVELY. FOR NOW, WE’RE WATCHING AND WAITING. IT IS HARD TO SPECULATE ABOUT THE MOTIVES OF ANYBODY BUT IT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP IN MIND THAT EVERYBODY — WE’RE TALKING ABOUT POLITICIANS WHEN YOU GET DOWN TO IT. ALL OF THEM HAVE RUN FOR MULTIPLE OFFICES, HELD VARIOUS DIFFERENT OFFICES IN THE PAST AND SO AT SOME LEVEL, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE POLITICS INVOLVED, I THINK. ♪ ♪ THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ANNOUNCING A $10 MILLION GRANT TO HELP SCHOOLS IMPROVE LITERACY. LP’S TAKING A LOOK AT LITERACY ACROSS THE STATE AND WHAT ARE YOU FINDING? WELL, ANDRE’, AN ESTIMATED 20 PERCENT OF LOUISIANANS ARE CONSIDERED ILL LITERATE. WHAT IS GOING ON IN NEIGHBORHOODS AND WHAT ARE SCHOOLS DOING AND WHAT OPTIONS ARE THERE? I THINK WE ARE WHERE WE WOULD LIKE TO BE. A LOVE OF ROADING OFTEN STARTS WITH FAMILY. THIS WOMAN AND HER SON TAKE PART IN A LOUISIANA ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES CALLED PRIMETIME. WE DO MORE READING AT HOME AND WE’RE MORE FOCUSED ON READING WITH EACH OTHER NOW THAT I AM PART OF THE PROGRAM, GO I THINK I AM READING MORE FLUENTLY, MORE THAN I WAS BEFORE. ACCORDING TO THE PRIMETIME COORDINATOR, A LOVE OF READING TAKES PRACTICE AND WITH IT, CONFIDENCE. SINCE I HAVE BEEN IN PRIMETIME, THEY ARE REALLY INTERESTED IN READING, REALLY EXCITED TO SEE WHAT IS THE NEXT BOOK AND THE NEXT TOPIC TOPICD THEME OF THE BOOK WE ARE GOING TO BE BE READING. UNFORTUNATELY, MANY LOUISIANA RESIDENTS DON’T DEVELOP THAT LOVE OF READING OR LITERACY SKILLS UNTIL WELL INTO ADULTHOOD. GARY ROBERTS IS THE DIRECTOR OF THE ADVOCATES WHICH HELP ADULTS READ. HE SAYS 20 PERCENT OF LOUISIANANS ARE NOT LITERATE. ONE OF THE ISSUES IS JUST TO HAVE THE COURAGE TO COME IN AND DO IT AND WITH 64, HE WAS THE PERSON I WAS NOT ABLE TO REACH. HE HAS BEEN ABLE TO COVER IT UP ALL THIS TIME. HE SAYS HIS SPOUSE KNOWS AND A COUPLE OF HIS CHILDREN KNOW. WHAT LITERACY MEANS HAS EVOLVED OVER TIME. BEFORE THE CIVIL WAR, YOU WERE CONSIDERED LITERATE IF YOU COULD WRITE YOUR OWN NAME. BY WORLD WAR II, IT WAS IF YOU ARE READING AT A 8TH GRADE LEVEL. IN RECENT YEARS, IT HAS BEEN MEASURED MORE IN TERMS OF WHETHER YOU HAVE THE NECESSARY SKILLS AND READING AND WRITING COMPUTATION, TO FUNCTION IN SOCIETY, FOR YOUR EMPLOYMENT, YOUR FAMILY’S NEEDS. ROBERTSON SAYS THE SKILLS AREN’T DEVELOPED AS A CHILD OR YOUNG ADULT FOR MANY REASONS. THERE ARE THOSE WHO WILL TELL YOU, YEAH, IT WAS JUST A DUMB MOVE TO DROP OUT OF SCHOOL WHEN I DID OR I FOLLOWED THE CROWD. BUT THEN YOU WILL HAVE THE OTHERS WHO WILL TELL YOU THAT THEY HAD A LEARNING DISABILITY AND DIDN’T GET THE HELP THEY NEEDED. AND YOU HAVE OTHERS WHO WILL TELL YOU I WAS THE ONLY CHILD AT HOME IN A SINGLE-PARENT HOME, MY MOM HAD CANCER, SOMEONE HAD TO TAKE CARE OF HER. STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS SAYS THE DEPARTMENT IS MAKING PROGRESS IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING SKILLS. FOURTH GRADE IS WHEN STUDENTS SHIFT FROM LEARNING TO READ TO READING TO LEARN. ACTUALLY LOUISIANA AND MOST STATES HAVE MADE GOOD GROWTH IN 4TH GRADE READING OVER THE YEARS BUT LOUISIANA RANKING NATIONALLY IS STILL NOT ONE OF THE HIGHER STATES, NOT EVEN CLOSE. AND THERE ARE A LOT OF REASONS FOR THAT. CERTAINLY CHALLENGES AT HOME OR IN COMMUNITIES THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THAT BUT IRRESPECTIVE OF THOSE THINGS, WE AS EDUCATORS, HAVE TO BE AS SKILLED AS POSSIBLE ON EARLY IDENTIFICATION OF LEARNING NEEDS AND ADDRESSING THOSE NEEDS ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO STUDENTS BEING ABLE TO READ. WHITE SAYS THE STATE IS DOIG A NUMBER OF THINGS. FIRST WE PUT IN A WAVE OF ASSESSMENT ASSESSMENT TESTS THAT ALLOWS THE SCHOOLS JUST A CHECKUP, A HIGH QUALITY LOOK AT THEIR LETTER AWARENESS, ABILITY TO READ AND ABILITY TO COMPREHEND WHEN THEY GET OLDER, THE MEANING WHAT HAVE IT IS THEY ARE READING. SECONDLY, THE CURRICULA THAT IS IMPROVING. CURRICULA CAN HELP TEACHERS WITH KIDS IN THE EARLY AGES, TRYING TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE GETTING THE HELP THAT THEY NEED. THE STATE IS DOING ALL OF THOSE THINGS AND WE’RE SEEING GRADE IN FOURTH GRADE LITERACY. NO MATTER WHAT YOUR LEVEL OF READING SKILL, LITERACY CONTRIBUTES TO LIFE-LONG LEARNING. JOHN OWNS AND OPERATES HOUSE BOOKS IN LOUISIANA. READING IS IMPORTANT NO MATTER YOUR AGE BECAUSE IT EXPANDS YOUR HORIZON AND HOW YOU RELATE TO EACH OTHER. ALL KNOWLEDGE IS IN READING AND HAVING THAT AT YOUR FINGERTIPS, IT IS THE CLOSEST WE HAVE TO BEING ABLE TO PUT OURSELVES IN SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOES. BACK AT PRIMETIME, THEY ARE READING THE BIG ORANGE SLOT. THE BOOK IS ABOUT A HOMEOWNER WHO HELPS NEIGHBORS EXPRESS THEMSELVES AND THAT TRANSLATES TO CHILDREN BETTER EXPRESSING THEMSELVES. THAT IS WHAT THE POWER OF READING CAN DO. SOMETHING I DIDN’T GET TO SPIN INTO THIS STORY IS SUPPORTING LOCAL BOOK STORES MEANS SUPPORTING LOCAL AUTHORS WHO ARE OFTEN WRITING ABOUT THE WORLD AROUND US. KELLY, THANK YOU SO MUCH, THAT IS SO INTERESTING. LOUISIANA IS ATTACKING UP THE SUBJECT OF LITERACY THIS MONTH IN A PROGRAM THAT AIRS AUGUST 22ND AT 9:00 P.M. FORMER FOUR-TERM GOVERNOR EDWARDS TURNED 91 THIS MONTH. YOU MAY REMEMBER HIM FOR THE CORRUPTION TRIAL BUT HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE SUCCESS IN OFFICE AND GETTING REELECTED? KELLY LOOKED INTO THE ARCHIVES FOR THIS STORY. WELL, EDWARDS HAS BEEN NOTED FOR FOLLOWING THE CONSTITUTION. MANY OF THE EXPERTS AT LPB THAT HAVE SPOKEN WITH EDWARDS OVER THE YEARS AND WHO YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE HERE HAS SINCE PASSED AWAY. YOU KNOW, ALL THESE YEARS, PEOPLE NEVER KNEW ME OR MY LIFE’S WORTH. NEVER GOT AN OPPORTUNITY TO TELL MY STORY. IN 1995 AT THE END OF HIS FOURTH TERM AS GOVERNOR, HE LOOKED BACK ON HIS ACCOMPLISHMENT. HIS BY — BIOGRAPHY FIRST SETTLED ON HIS UPBRINGING. GREW UP ON A FARM AND REALIZED I DIDN’T LIKE THAT KIND OF WORK. I ALWAYS HAD A SYMPATHY FOR PEOPLE WHO WERE POOR, BIG FAMILIES, NO EDUCATION AND INABILITY TO GET ON IN LIFE. HE WAS ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANT PEOPLE WHO SERVED AS GOVERNOR IN LOUISIANA. HE WAS HAND SOME, ARTICULATE AND WITTY AND HAD A BIT OF A ROGUISHNESS ABOUT HIM FOR THE LOUISIANA VOTERS. THERE WAS ALWAYS THAT ATTITUDE THERE AND TALK ABOUT POWER. HE HAD IT, HE WANTED IT. HE HAD A BIG PERSONALITY THAT FILLED THE STAGE IN A DIFFERENT KIND OF WAY SO PEOPLE SAW IN HIM A DYNAMIC GUY WHO COULD GET THINGS DONE. MORE EDWIN EDWARDS JUST THIS SIDE, JUST THIS SIDE. THE FIRST THING HE CHANGED, HE REVAMPED THE STATE CONSTITUTION. CC73 IS WHAT THEY CALLED IT, AND THEY PRODUCED THE CONSTITUTION FOR 1974 WHICH IS WHAT WE STILL OPERATE UNDER. BEFORE THAT, THERE WERE 200 DEPARTMENT AND THE CONSTITUTION MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR US TO REORGANIZE THE GOVERNMENT WITH 20 DEPARTMENTS WHICH MADE IT MUCH MORE MORE RESPONSE SIEVE O NEEDS AND MORE ECONOMICAL. WHAT HIS STOCK IN TRADE WAS HE LISTENED TO EVERYONE ELSE AND KNEW HOW TO BUILD A COALITION. HE HAD FOUR ROOMS, COULD BRING IN FOUR DIFFERENT GROUPS AND ROTATED BETWEEN THE FOUR LIKE A DOCTOR WOULD. HE WAS VERY EFFICIENT THAT WAY. USUALLY HE KNEW WHY THEY WERE THERE AND WHAT HE COULD OR COULDN’T DO. I WOULD SAY THE BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT IS WHEN HE CHANGED THE TAXATION OF OIL AND GAS TO A PER BARREL OR CUBIC FOOT TO A PERCENT OF VALUE. BY CHANGING IT TO A PERCENT OF VALUE, WE WERE ABLE TO ENJOY THE GREAT BOON WHEN OIL PRICES WENT UP A. ALL OF THE GREAT HOSPITALS WERE COMPLETELY MODERNIZED AND RENOVATED BY ME. WHO PLANNED THE PARKING LOT AT THE FOOTBALL STADIUM? BY 1974, THE SECOND QUARTER, I THINK IT WAS, HE HAD FLIPPED A $30 MILLION DEFICIT TO A $88 MILLION IS YOUR SURPLUS. HE WAS CONSTITUTIONALLY BARRED FROM SEEKING A THIRD TERM BUT IT PAVED THE WAY FOR A REPUBLICAN TO TAKE HIS SEAT. EDWARDS IS, BY DEFAULT, FATHER OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. I SPENT A LOT OF TIME, A LOT OF EFFORT BEFORE I FINALLY GOT THE NOMINATION AND THEN I HAD TO FACE GABE IN THE GENERAL ELECTION AND THOUGHT THAT WAS UNFAIR. SO HE SAID IT IS TOO MUCH TO, HAVE TO RAISE MONEY AND GO TO THE STUMP AND IT IS SENSELESS THAT THE PEOPLE WOULD GO TO THE POLLS THREE TIME TO VOTE FOR GOVERNOR. HE OPENED EVERYBODY HE WILL FOR EVERYBODY. TRYING TO WIN A THIRD TERM, BUT CORRUPTION AND OIL MOPE CAUGHT UP WITH HIM. THERE WERE A NUMBER OF INVESTIGATIONS INTO INTERRUPTION IT IS FUNNY, IT STARTED WITH SUSPICION THAT CORRUPTION WAS SPENDING AND GAMBLING HABITS. WELL, I COULDN’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I WAS A PUBLIC FIGURE. THEY HAD A RIGHT TO INVESTIGATE AND LAW ENFORCEMENT HAD THE SAME PRIVILEGE AND I ACCEPTED THAT. STATEMENT THE REPUBLICAN U.S. ATTORNEY HAS MADE OR MISTAKES I HAVE MADE, WE WILL NOT KNOW WHICH OF US IS TO BLAME UNTIL THE TRIAL HAS BEEN CONCLUDED. HE WENT TO TRIAL AND AVOIDED CONVICTION IN 86 BUT IN WILL 87, VOTERS ELECTED THEIR OWN VERDICT. HE DEFEATED A REPUBLICAN FOR A FINAL TERM. WELL, I THINK HE WAS SIMPLY A THROWBACK TO THE OLD WAY OF THINKING IN OUR STATE THAT THE LAW DOES NOT APPLY TO EVERYONE. HISTORY HAS BEEN VERY CRUEL TO EDWIN EDWARDS. NO EDWARDS FOR COURT CASES, FOR QUOTES, FOR SEXUAL SHENANIGANS BUT THEY DON’T KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT WHAT HE DID FOR THE STATE. THAT BODY WILL COME FLOATING DOWN THE RIVER. I SUPPOSE THE FEDS SAT BY THE RIVER LONG ENOUGH AND HERE COMES MY BODY. IT DEPENDS ON WHO YOU TALK TO BUT MANY SAY WHAT EDWARDS HAD SEEN IN HIS TIME WOULD HAVE HAPPENED ANY WAY. OTHERS INSIDE OF THE IT TOOK HIS NEGOTIATING TACTICS TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER AND MOVE THE STATE FORWARD. KELLY, THANKS FOR THAT, WE APPRECIATE IT. YOU CAN FIND MORE ON THAT STORY ONLINE. LPB HAS PARTNERED WITH CHEF MICHAEL GULOTTA OF MOPHO AND MAYPOP IN NEW ORLEANS AND SOME LOUISIANA ARTISTS TO CREATE A ONE OF A KIND MENU FOR AND YOU SNEAK DINING AND ART EXPERIENCE CALLED THE ART OF FOOD. BILLY IS ONE OF THOSE ARTISTS. HE HAS A PASSION FOR PAINTING LANDSCAPES. I GREW UP ON THE MISS IN A SMALL TOWN. FORTUNATE TO GROW UP RIGHT ON THE WATER. WE HAD A LITTLE JOHN BOAT, A LITTLE 5-HORSEPOWER MOTOR AND WE WOULD GO OUT AND GO FISHING, THAT WAS MY CAMP, SITTING IN NATURE. AND WHEN I GOT INTERESTED IN ART, I ALWAYS KNEW THE THING I WOULD PAINT WOULD BE NATURE. HE HAS INCREDIBLE DEPTH. YOU SEE IT NATURALLY AND CAN UNDERSTAND IT IN NATURE WHEN YOU SEE IT BUT TO TRANSLATE THAT TO A TWO-DIMENSIONAL SURFACE TAKES SKILL. THE COLOR PERCEPTIVE, SHOWING DEPARTMENT. I STUDIED IN FINE ARTS AND ALSO THROUGH OBSERVATION. IT TAKES A LOT OF WORK TO DO IT BUT IT IS A LOT OF FUN. I WOULD CONSIDER MYSELF TO BE KIND OF A CLASSIC REALIST. IT IS REPRESENTATIONAL PAINTING BUT NOT REALISM. I FEEL THE EXPRESSION IS IN THE BOLD STROKE AND AT THE END, I COME IN A LITTLE HIGHER BUT THERE IS STILL PAINT ON THE SURFACE AND A QUALITY YOU CAN SEE. THE PROBLEM WITH LEARNING ABOUT THE REPRESENTATION ONCE YOU LEARN IT, AS I GET OLDER, YOU BACK DOWN AND BECOME LOOSER AND LESS INTERESTED IN THE CRAFT AND MORE INTERESTED IN THE EMOTIONAL PART. ONE OF MY FAVORITE SUBJECTS IS CLOUDS AND ONE OF MY FORE GROUNDS IS THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. I LOVE HAVING LARGE CUMULUS NIMBULUS CLOUDS, THESE HUGE CLOUDS AND I LOVE HAVING THE RIVER AT THE BOTTOM THAT WE CAN HAVE THIS INCREDIBLY LARGE CONTAINER SHIP, THIS BIG AND THE CLOUD IS GIGANTIC. WHAT WE THINK AS HUMANS IS BIG, NATURE IS FIVE TIMES LARGER. AND HERE IN NEW ORLEANS, WE’RE VERY FAMILIAR WITH NATURE AND EVERY SUMMER, WE GET READY FOR THE HURRICANE SEASON AND ARE ALWAYS REMINDED HOW PRECARIOUS WE ARE ON THIS TINY SLIVER OF LAND WITH WATER AT THE BOTTOM AND THAT IS WHAT I LIKE TO PAINT, THE PRECARIOUS NATURE OF THE LAND AND THE WATER AT THE BOTTOM. THE OTHER THING I LIKE TO PAINT IS THE OYSTER SHELL. IT IS THIS SIMPLE CREATION, WE KNOW THE MOTHER OF PEARL, ALL THE COLORS OF THE RAINBOW ARE IN IT. THE CREATURES INSIDE THE SHELL ARE MAGNIFICENT. THE GRAYS AND PINKS, LENDING TO A BEAUTIFUL COLOR. I LIKE SHOWING THEM IN A STRONG YELLOW LIGHT. WHAT IS INTERESTING IS PUTTING THE CRAB ON THE TOMATO IS I AM TRYING TO TAKE THIS CRAB THAT WAS ALIVE VERY RECENTLY AND MAKING IT LOOK A LITTLE MORE ALIVE AS WELL. IT WAS MORE OF A PRACTICAL SITUATION INSTEAD OF HAVING A CRAB LAY FLAT ON THE SURFACE AND I NOTICED BY LIFTING HIM UP A LITTLE BIT, YOU ARE ADDING MORE CHARACTER, A NARRATIVE TO IT. I AM MUCH MORE INTERESTED IN THIS, NOT AS A PIECE OF FOOD BUT MORE AS A LIVING CREATURE. THE BLUE CRAB IS INCREDIBLE, TOO. IT HAS WORKED SO HARD TO CREATE ALL THESE BEAUTIFUL COLORS, EVERY SINGLE COLOR OF THE RAINBOW. THE REDS, THE BLUES, THE ORANGES, THE PINKS ON THIS CREEPY THING CRAWLING AROUND IN THE MUD AND WORKING SO HARD TO BECOME THIS BEAUTIFUL THING. SO TO ACHIEVE THE EFFECTS OF WATER OR TO PAINT THE SHAPE OF CLOUDS, ONCE YOU UNDERSTAND PAINTING, YOU UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING ELSE. IT IS VALUE AND DESIGN. WE PERCEIVE A DROP OF WATER AS A PARTICULAR THING BUT IN REALITY, IT IS A VALUE. THE GARLIC AT THE END YOU CAN SEE THE HIGHEST VALUE WITH PURE WHITE LAID ON IN A PARTICULAR MANNER. I AM FROM THE SCHOOL OF THOUGHT THAT DRAWING IS EVERYTHING. I AM CONSTANTLY DRAWING. I USUALLY WORK WET ON WET, A LA PRIMA. ALMOST SOMETIMES I DO ALL THE PAINTING IN ONE SITTING BY PUTTING DOWN THE THIN LAYERS, THEN THE FASTER LAYERS AND HEAVIER LAYERS SO YOU GET DEPTH IN THE PAINTING IN ONE SITTING. A FEW WEEKS LATER, I WILL REALIZE YOU KNOW IT NEEDS SOMETHING GO HERE AND A LITTLE SOMETHING THERE. ♪ ♪ MAN, I LOVE HIS WORK. HERE AT LPB, OUR HEART ARE HEAVY TONIGHT.
