Colton McGowan: The 6 Year Old Painter

Colton McGowan: The 6 Year Old Painter

– I believe it was a Thursday in the beginning of this summer. I was coming home and I
called the wife because Colton had been going
through some extreme pains. They found a mass on his lung. They did the biopsy, found out it was third stage Hodgkin lymphoma. While we were here, getting
all these test done, you know Colton was in
high anxiety you know, and what else can you do
when you’re in a situation other than just you know, kind of keep your focus off of that. Thank God like Child Life
here, thank God for them. They would come in like
once or twice a day and kind of give us entertainment. They have an art room, and they
offered us to paint. And we were like We just watched a Bob
Ross, so let’s paint. (gentle instrumental music) So we started painting this thing, and there was a bunch of
other people in the room doing their own little arts and crafts. You know, we were taking our time and we did like this
little mountain scene. So that would be like a gift for Mom ’cause it was the day before Mother’s Day. So we took it back,
and Mom was blown away. – It was amazing, I couldn’t
believe that he did it. And to now watch him
paint, really nurturing now what he has found with
this little negative that was a blip in his life
hopefully, that now he’ll paint. – The focus that art gives you is healing. When you have something
that you can’t control, the only thing you can do
is focus on the best things. After four cycles of chemo
treatments, he is cancer free. So he’s not even in
remission, there’s no cancer. So yeah, he’s great.
