Behind the Scenes: Awaken

Behind the Scenes: Awaken

For an exhibit like this we often start
designing anywhere from nine to 12 months in advance of opening day. There
are so many aspects to the exhibition that require thoughtful design, from the
way in which the art itself is mounted and displayed, to the path the visitor
will take through it, right down to the signage and the font used. For example,
the font was originally designed for transportation and passports, and we’re
carrying that history through in this concept of a dynamic quest. Then with the
help of the scale model, the curators and designers flesh out the arrangement and
intent. It allows everybody to see the whole space at the same time. We thought
lit panels kind of directing you through it would be a nice way to clarify this
complicated topic on a simple frame. We looked at a couple different things for
the last gallery. So you basically see this stone sculpture that’s, what, 240
pounds, that’s floating. You don’t know where the lights really coming from. Self
reflection. It’s an immersive experience.
