› : There are three aspects of being here at Hofstra that I love the most. First and
foremost is the students. I really get to know the students, not only as their advisor
and as their professor but as a mentor. The students are really creative and artistically
gifted. Also, it’s a very diverse student body, in terms of age, a lot of people in
our graduate program are changing careers. They’re diverse in every other way, too,
socioeconomically, ethnically, and I find it really stimulating. Secondly I love, I
really love the faculty in the School of Education. Everybody is really passionate about what
they do and really care about kids and schools. One of the gratifying aspects of being here
at Hofstra is there’s a lot of support for innovation. If you want to teach a new course,
if you want to revamp your program to make it more competitive, there’s a lot of support
amongst the faculty and administration to do that. Hofstra’s Art Education Program
is unique for many reasons. We’ve been chosen as one of the top 100 schools in education
in the United States. Our students are asked to study the technological aspects of art,
the new areas; new media, video, computer graphics, and photography, and this has given
our students an advantage in the workplace. That our students study art history extensively,
not only Western art history, but they’re required to study non-Western art history.
All of our professors, part time and full time in the Art Education area, are also artists.
Art Education students also have the opportunity to exhibit their work at Hofstra. The Art
Education Program at Hofstra University offers a series of unique courses. Not simply art
education methods courses, which are always, which are required by the state and part of
every program, but we’ve also developed some programs that encourage the artist-teacher
model, such as Drawing for Teachers, Art History for Teachers, Video for Teachers, where students
get to look at these particular disciplines at how they learn as artists, using that knowledge
for their own skill building, and how to apply it in their teaching. Students, every semester,
work with the Museum Educator here and attend museums in the city to learn how to show art.
We’ve recently added a course in where students get to study interdisciplinary art curriculum
in Italy and we’re offering it again this summer. The theoretical foundation of our
program is based on several tenants. One, our students understand the perceptual stages,
the artistic perceptual stages that children and adolescents go through. Students study
many different approaches, philosophical approaches. The newest iteration or philosophy in our
field is called visual culture art education, which examines popular culture in new media.
Our philosophy here is to expose students to all of these perspectives with the hope
that they will develop their own outlook. When you obtain an Art Education degree, you
become certified Pre-K to grade 12. Art Education is a great career choice for somebody with
artistic skill who’s considering what they might do in teaching for many reasons. There
are very few career choices for an artist where you can work with materials all day
and still have three months off to pursue your own career as an artist. You get to impact
the lives of children and adolescents in a way that very few adults get to do, especially
in today’s educational climate. You can be that person who really changes a child’s
life. 8 P e x – — ñåÙÉÙñ h0|b h0|b>*
